Four exhibitions celebrate Rothko's birthday in Daugavpils

September 25 was Mark Rothko's 112th birthday. Four new exhibitions were opened at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center to honor the event, Latvian Radio reported on Saturday.

Color and feeling, politics and erotica, questions about the location of the truth - that all and more you can find at the opening exhibitions of the new season at the Mark Rothko Art Center.

One of the exhibitions features works painted during the Mark Rothko symposium and showcases paintings from 11 artists of eight countries. Artists and organizers alike sound truly excited about the feelings, impressions and conversations they've had during the symposium.

Janine Gerber, a German artist, told Latvian Radio that she had been inspired when arriving at the art center and looking at the works on stand here. Voldemaras Barakauskas from Lithuania seems to have had it similarly. In the symposium, Voldemaras painted dinosaurs in watercolor, though he was reluctant to say what it means, saying the viewer has to decide on that.

A total of four new exhibitions were opened on the birthday of Mark Rothko, including an exhibition of Latvian contemporary ceramics, Valdis Bušs' exhibition titled 'What is the truth?', along with Jose Manuel Ciria's 'Before the title, beyond the surface'.

The new exhibitions will be open until November 8.
