Movies such as The Criminal Excellence Fund (Kriminalas Ekselences Fonds), Paradise '89 (Paradize '89) and The Pagan King (Nameja Gredzens) have quadrupled the share of local films on Latvian film market already this year, with several other eagerly-anticipated features such as Homo Novus still to come.
The share of local films at the box office has increased from less than 8 percent to 28 percent, the National Culture Center's representative Kristine Matisa told the LETA newswire April 18.
During the first three months this year, three Latvian films were among Top 5 most popular films with moviegoers. Together with To Be Continued (Turpinajums), the total share of Latvian films on Latvia's market is currently at 28 percent, the highest proportion to date.
The most popular film at Latvia's cinemas in the first quarter of this year was The Pagan King which was seen by 79,216 filmgoers. Close behind it was crowd-funded The Criminal Excellence Fund with 66,341 viewers and Madara Dislere's Paradise '89 in third with 49,444 viewers.
