The application was signed by Culture Minister Nauris Puntulis.
"The nomination of Kuldīga, highlighting the urban structure created during the times of Grand Duchy of Courland, reflects the important role of society in the preservation of cultural heritage.
"The municipality of Kuldīga, with its cohesive and enthusiastic society, has proved itself to be a great host, creating an example of good practice in the preservation of the historic center of a protected city, making investments, involving citizens and inspiring with its own model," said the Minister of Culture Nauris Puntulis.
"It is a great day today, for we have completed a period of twenty years, during which we have worked and walked this way to reach an application for UNESCO's World Heritage List. I want to express my confidence that Kuldiga will enter UNESCO's World Heritage List and this will be a great success not only for Kuldīga, but for Latvia as a whole," said Inga Bērziņa, head of the City Council.
Previously, President Egils Levits had supported the idea to include Kuldīga in the list.
