Latvia Weekend Events: What season is it?

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Nature is undecided whether it should be winter or spring, so too are we wavering or perhaps oscillating between modern tunes and classics, improvisation and heavily scripted stuff... and more, all within this weekend's event guide.

1. Alternative awards

On February 12 the Alternative.lv annual awards will be handed at the Pūce, Klubs naktī club. You'll get to learn who made the Album, Video, Band of the Year and see who got the Golden Pear award and more.

Bands like S.I.L.S., Laika suns, Laime pilnīga, Ādažu Shipsi, All Day Long and others will perform at the venue with DJ AI-VA making sure your legs are moving at all times.

2. Classics from Vienna

On February 12 the Lielā ģilde hall at 7 p.m. will welcome the Classic Vienna festival opening concert with interpretations of Mozart by singer Elīna Šimkus, the Riga Dome Boys' Choir and Sinfonietta Rīga conducted by Mārtiņš Klišāns.

While on February 14 the program will be continued with the Wine and Music concert at Spīķeri, with a journey of taste and music, with more popular notes of music being revealed in an interpretation by Latvian Sound Quartet.

3. Improvisation marathon

On February 13 and 14 (yes, you smoochy Valentines!) the Riga Improvisation Theater invites visitors to look at the 24-hour improvisation marathon at Kaņepes Culture Center. It starts February 13 at 7 p.m.

Viewers will enjoy witty jokes that break down monotony in the short improvisational forms. There'll be true horror stories and true emotions - experienced real-time too - on the stage for a whole day and night, plus you'll get to attend improvisation workshops lead by Raimonds Ruzenieks with a whopping 17 years of experience in the genre.

4. Nature challenges you!

An adventurous walk organized by the Gandrs outdoors recreation company awaits you from February 12 to February 14. Spend the day of Valentine and Cupid outdoors! Teams of two are invited to participate in the 50-km walk outdoors with special prizes for outdoorsy people waiting at the end. Participants will set up camp under the cold sky and hope for the mercy of the elements.

Can you smell it? On February 13 Liepāja will feature a smelty festival called the "Smelt festival in Liepāja", with smelt referring of course to the European smelt, a type of fish. You are invited to eat a lot of fish, listen to music and join the merrymaking and jolly good fun characteristic of such events. Children will have things to do as well as they'll be able to make pirate and mermaid costumes and try to find out what's fishy about magic tricks...

An ice fishing contest will be taking place concurrently.
