Latvian director opens at La Scala

A production of Giacomo Puccini's classic opera Madama Butterfly, staged by Latvian director Alvis Hermanis, is set to premiere at La Scala opera house in Italy December 7, with Culture Minister Dace Melbarde expected to attend the performance, the minister's spokeswoman Ginta Bromane told the LETA news service.

Hermanis' production of Madama Butterfly is scheduled to open the new season at the historic 18th century opera house in Milan.

Hermanis worked on the production with a creative team which includes costume designer Kristine Jurjane, choreographer Alla Sigalova and video artist Ineta Sipunova, among others.

The premiere of the opera production will be broadcast live at the Splendid Palace movie theater in Riga.
