Latvian writer wins novel prize

Latvian writer Maris Berzins was handed the Baltic Assembly Prize for Literature 2015 in a ceremony in Vilnius on Thursday evening, the Latvian parliament’s press service said.

Berzins was given the prize for Svina Garsa (The Taste of Lead), a novel depicting events unfolding in Latvia at the beginning of World War II.

This year's Baltic Assembly Prize for Arts 2015 has been awarded to Lithuanian conductor Modestas Pitrenas for creative efforts promoting cultural interaction among the Baltic states, namely, performances in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The Baltic Assembly Prize for Science 2015 has been given to Eva-Clarita Pettai and Vello Pettai from Estonia for their monograph "Transitional and Retrospective Justice in the Baltic States".

The prizes, each worth €5,000, were presented during the 34th session of the Baltic Assembly in Vilnius.
