Latvia's Culture Minister concerned about next year

Take note – story published 3 years ago

The culture sector will be able to survive this autumn, but the lack of certainty about the coming year is worrying, Minister of Culture Nauris Puntulis (National Alliance) told Latvian Television October 19.

The Minister said: “I am absolutely sure about this autumn, after speaking yesterday with the institutions under our authority, we can survive this autumn, even if conditions deteriorate. The same applies to the private sector.”

The Minister said that funding for private cultural institutions was still available, as well as another competition for self-employed workers' aid program was planned.

“What's going to happen in the first three months of next year really bothers me,” the minister said. “But I think I'm not the only one. I think it bothers any minister, the government as a whole. We cannot predict how a pandemic will develop.”

Regard the restrictions on amateur art groups, which are in force until 6 November, the Minister noted that people from various other 'social bubbles' meet in arts' groups, which is a risk for COVID-19 spreading.

“Maybe we really need to clench our teeth, these three weeks have to be endured so that this pandemic does not move into professional art, as has unfortunately happened at the moment in the opera,” the Minister said.
