Rock returns after 33 years AWOL

A large stone or boulder that was believed lost for three decades has been found - exactly where it was before.

Significant stones are a feature of the Latvian cultural landscape, often being associated with sites of folkloric, religious or historical significance.

In this case the stone even had a name - 'Davini II' - and was located in Berzaine district. It was included in a register of important stones along with its brother, 'Davini I'.

However, for reasons that are not entirely clear, the stone, which has some markings scratched into its surface, was then believed to have been "lost" with no-one sure where it was to be found.

Now it has reappeared thanks to the efforts of researchers from the website which re-established its location.

Part of the reason for its puzzling disappearance seems to have been that it adopted a disguise - a thick covering of moss - which hid its distinctive marks in much the same way that international terrorist Carlos the Jackal wore a false beard to escape detection. project manager Walter Grīviņš officially confirmed on 26 February found that Davini II was indeed still exactly where it was last reported 33 years ago.
