Ice skating in Rīga
If weather forecasters prove to be accurate, it's unlikely to be a white Christmas this year, but it can still be an icy one if you head to the public skating rink located next to the Congress house (Kongresu nama) in central Rīga. Instructors are available to help old and young alike and the rink will be open from 11:00 until 18:00. Take your personal ID documents and you can rent skates for free.

Christmas musical concerts
There is no shortage of seasonal songs to enjoy in the land that sings. Literally hundreds of Christmas concerts are taking place in towns and cities across the country, with highlights including Morning and Evening Songs at the Riga Dome with the famous Riga Dome Boys' Choir, or Bach's Christmas Oratorio just across the River Daugava at Torņakalns Church under conductor Kaspars Putniņš. For a more contemporary sound December 25 and 26 will see Christmas concerts at Kipsala exhibition hall featuring Atis Ieviņš, Katrīna Gupalo, vocal group "Baritoni”, Mikus Abaroniņš and Dināra Rudāne.
Winter in the Botanical Gardens
From December 6 until January 5 a Winter Light Garden, created by 20 Latvian light artists, will be open to the public at the University of Latvia's Botanical Gardens. The variety of light installations allow children to play in the rays of light, and gives everyone something bright to enjoy at this tenebrous time of year. Closed December 24 and 31.
