Three for the Weekend: Happy birthday Rīga

Take note – story published 1 year ago

As usual, the 'birthday' of Latvia's capital city Rīga is celebrated at the end of August, this being the 821st birthday. We offer some events in Rīga this weekend for you to enjoy.

Rīga birthday picnic

On August 20, events will take place in the heart of Rīga, the old town, all day. Starting noon, concerts will sound in Rātslaukums, Doma laukums, and Pulvertornis. Interactive theater performances will take place in Līvu laukums, whereas the actual picnic at long shared tables will be set up on Smilšu Street. For younger visitors, creative workshops will be available at the Architects' Society and by Doma Cathedral.

The program is available on the Facebook event.

Circus and Street art festival RE RĪGA

From August 17 to 21, the festival RE RĪGA involving performances of contemporary circus and street art by international performers will take place in Rīga, the center of the city and Āgenskalns. You can check out the event on the circus website.

Poetry without borders

For the fifth time, the International poetry festival 'Poetry without borders' will take place in Latvia, this year particularly focusing on Latvian and Ukrainian poetry. Traditionally, the festival features poetry in three languages: Latvian, Russian, and the language of the year, which this time is Ukrainian.

The festival takes place August 18 to 21, in Andrejsala, Ukrainian community center Common Ground, and on the final day in Cēsis, art space Mala.
