Three for the Weekend: Modern art, modern music

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Here are this week's weekend events for Latvia.

Two for the price of one - modern art in Riga

The Kim? center for contemporary arts is opening two new exhibitions on Friday, April 20th at two different locations - Tallinas 6 at 5.30pm and at Kim? (Sporta 2 k-1) from 7pm. The exhibitions explore the complex ties between the West and the East.

Power Failure, a performance by Dafna Maimon is also to take place at Sporta 2 k-1 at about 7.15pm.

Psych rock at Aleponija

“Les Attitudes Spectrales (first a duo, now a trio) are desperately trying to be a pop band, but so far failed miserably and instead end up playing some kind of noisy psych rock that people seem to enjoy for some reasons. Go figure… Their lyrics make no sense and their gigs are short, so be there on time!"

They're playing at Aleponija Saturday at about 9pm. Read more HERE.

Persian Language Lessons (play) at Žanis Lipke Memorial

The last two performances of the play that took Latvia by storm are slated to take place at the Žanis Lipke Memorial - a place dedicated to the memory of eponymous Žanis Lipke, a noted savior of the Jews during World War II. The play offers an alternative take on the fate of Bruno Schulz, a Polish-Jewish writer who was killed in 1942.

Yes--it's in Latvian (and Russian), so some language knowledge is a necessity. But the place is worth visiting no matter what language you speak. So we're leaving the recommendation here.
