Three for the Weekend: Movie Specials, Imprisoned Writers, Shape of Latvia

The long weekend has already started for most in Latvia. In case you are still wondering what to do over the remainder of the weekend, here are some tips with an independence-day flair to them.

Movie Specials

Several Latvian cinemas are offering special screenings of the most prominent Latvian film efforts of recent years.

Forum Cinemas is showing the box-office record-breaker historical drama Dvēseļu putenis (Blizzard of Souls) November 19, 20, and 21 (tickets here).

On November 20, K Suns is premiering the newly released historical mini-series Emīlija. Latvijas preses karaliene following the life and work of the richest woman in Latvia's history, the 'Queen of Latvian press'Emīlija Benjamiņa. The mini-series consists of seven 50-minute episodes which K Suns is showing without break, perfect if you're a binge-watcher. For the time being, the film is available only in Latvian. On November 20 and 24, Forum Cinemas is showing this year's Latvian applicant for the Academy Awards, Bedre (The Pit). You can get your tickets here.

Day of the Imprisoned Writer

On Saturday, November 20, 15:00, an event organised by the Latvian PEN and Jānis Akuraters Museum will take place at the museum (Riga, Ojāra Vācieša Street 6a).

November 15 is marked worldwide as the International Imprisoned Writer's Day, in which the public is invited to remember literates being pursued, imprisoned, and repressed for what they wrote. Readings and reflections will be shared by writers Inga Gaile, Katrīna Rudzīte, Vika Trenas (Belarus), Dainis Deigelis, Ilmārs Šlāpins, Justīne Vernera and Maira Valtere. Shape of Latvia
