Three Walks for the Weekend in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Enjoy the snowy weather while it is here, and have a look at these locations that are especially gorgeous in the winter.

Raunas Staburags

The Staburags cliff of Rauna is a 3.5 m high and 17 m long unique post-glacial natural object, a rock that is a source of freshwater limestone formed by springs. This is the only such nature object in Latvia since the great Staburags cliff of the Daugava River was flooded.

It is located in Rauna, Rauna parish (map here).

You can find out more about Raunas Staburags on this website.

Zilaiskalns

Zilaiskalns (“Blue hill”) is a 127-meter high hill in Kocēni municipality. It is an ancient sanctuary, a medieval cemetery and a nature reserve. Zilaiskalns has just recently obtained a sight platform, an informative stand, as well as an improved pathway and benches.

Zilaiskalns is located in Kocēni municipality, Zilākalna county (map here).

Saulrieta trail

The Saulrieta taka (Sunset trail) in Saulkrasti is a great spot along the coast for a peaceful walk. It starts by the White Dune and weaves for 3.5 kilometers until the Pēterupe River. The best view, as indicated by the title, might be at sunset, but views are guaranteed to be nice enough during the daytime -- especially with the weather as it is now.
