Vanilla reigns supreme in Latvian ice cream survey

Latvian ice creams are renowned for their superior taste as far away as – well, Estonia – but when it comes to what are the favorite flavors on the domestic market, supermarket giant Lidl claims to have discovered the answers.

A survey of 1,001 people commissioned by Lidl from market research company Norstat comes to the predictable conclusion that vanilla ('plombir') is Latvians' favorite ice cream flavor.

According to the survey, 41% of respondents recognized vanilla ice cream as the supreme ice cream.

Chocolate wins the silver medal with 26% support, while caramel is a slightly surprising third place on 13%, consigning a profusion of berries, fruits, mint, rum, lemon and [in our opnion the true connoisseur's choice] chicory into the lower levels of the ice cream preference pyramid.

Although it seems that most people like ice cream, 3% of the survey participants indicated that they do not eat ice cream. In total, 4% of men and 2% of women answered that they refrain from consuming ice cream completely, though whether you believe them is up to you.

"Not a single survey participant from Vidzeme admitted that they completely refuse this cold treat!" noted Lidl in a release about the matter, which also includes the fun fact that "In Latvia, one inhabitant eats an average of 3.74 liters of ice cream per year, according to the data of the Central Statistics Office."

"In 2021, 21 million liters of ice cream were produced in Latvia, and our country exports more ice cream than it imports," it adds.
