The Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) has discovered an illegal food production plant in Bauska county Code parish, from which nearly two tonnes of unsanitary food products have been removed and destroyed, ReTV reported October 8.

The food manufacturer has not only infringed the Food Circulation Law but has not been registered in the Enterprise Registry. In terms of size, it was equal to an average food company in Latvia.

PVD's inspection revealed that the company was operating in facilities where it was not possible to ensure hygiene requirements were met. Walls, ceilings, and floors were damaged and moldy, the venting system was not suitable for food production. An adequate water supply was not provided, the sewer was damaged.

The examination also showed that raw materials and finished products were not separated, thus exposing production to cross-contamination. Nearly two tonnes of various foods, mainly fresh or frozen pork, chicken, various meat and fishery products, cheese, curd, eggs, have been removed. The production was sold out of a truck that was not equipped with cooling appliances.

Several administrative infringement proceedings have been initiated against the owner of the company.

The PVD calls on consumers to be careful and demanding when purchasing food products in advertising portals and social media sites, always checking whether the product trader is identifiable in one of the PVD registers.
