The Internet catalog novadagarsa.lv, which lists local farmers, has compiled the self-harvest farms under the section "pašlasīšana" (self-harvest). You can find your nearest farms and their offer there.
Currently, there are early raspberry and cherry harvests, and this year several varieties are ripe at the same time. Heat and drought have caused them to ripen quickly.
Owner of the Lejasdārzi farm in Kuldīga municipality Mārcis Freimanis said: “What is very concentrated always has problems. We have the early varieties, the middle, the late ones, so that they would last for one-and-a-half months, but [it is not so] this year; we started [harvesting] on June 25, now it's coming to an end.”
Opening up fields for self-harvest in Latvia is becoming more and more popular.
Daiga Mellere, head of the Latvian Rural Consultation and Education Centre (LLKC), said: “We gradually have more and more of these farms, the owners are beginning to trust, because the guests must also learn, learn not to break plants, shrubs, to treat them gently, not to pick not just the prettiest berries, but all of them. That's what we're learning together.”
