VIDEO: Readings in remembrance of deportations

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On March 25 of this year at 11:00 there will be a simultaneous commemoration of the 74th anniversary of the deportations of March 25, 1949, when 42,300 Latvians were forcibly deported to Russia.

At commemorative events in 43 municipalities, the names of the deported, their ages and places of residence will be read out. The event will start with an address by President Egils Levits, and will be broadcast live on Latvian Television and here on LSM.

Live broadcasts of the readings can also be followed on the website of the Latvian National Library LNB.lv, as well as on the digital map specially developed for the commemorative event at https://deportetie.kartes.lv.

On the map of the section "Deported residents" you can see the lists of Latvian residents deported during the two main waves of Soviet atrocity in 1941 and 1949. By choosing the year of deportation, you can zoom in on the map so that you can see a specific address, house or farm. When you click on the circle, you can see a list with information about the people taken away including their name, surname and age.

The memorial event "Aizvestie. Neazimirstie" ("Taken Away. Not Forgotten") is organized by the Chancellery of the State President and the National Library of Latvia in cooperation with SIA "Jāņa sēta" and the Union of Latvian Municipalities, as well as 36 Latvian counties and seven national cities.

You can lean more about the Baltic deportations and the Soviet Union's terror tactics from the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.

In addition an excellent multilingual online virtual museum about the experiences of children deported to Siberia is here.
