This year, the British Embassy in Latvia will implement two projects related to the centenary of Latvia, based upon records of British support for the fledgling state in 1918 and 1919, the embassy said March 18.

Two projects have been developed in collaboration with historians and film-makers. In the spring, a half-hour documentary titled “Allied. The Role of Britain in the Fight for Independence of Latvia in 1918 and 1919” will be released and in the autumn, an exhibition titled “Protecting Freedom” will open at the Latvian National Library on a similar theme.

The initiative for the project comes from ambassador Keith Shannon.

“While studying the archives, I was very impressed by how deeply and in what detail British diplomats and military personnel understood what was happening in Latvia, and how closely and regularly they cooperated with the Latvian Provisional Government,” said Shannon, who has himself been ferreting out files from the British archives, some of which have been overlooked or forgotten until now.

The trailer for the documentary can be viewed above.
