On May 11 the donations portal “Ziedot.lv” started fundraising for the demolition of the 'occupation monument' in Uzvaras Park and €39 058 has already been collected by Thursday, May 12, morning, according to information on the portal.

“We must not watch aggression, we cannot let it in our home, the capital of Latvia. At a time when Ukraine is fighting for the independence of its country and defends a brutal invasion of Russia, no provocation and incitement to hatred in Latvia are acceptable,” the description indicates.

“The people of Latvia care about a free and democratic state, so there is no place for the “Occupation Monument” in Latvia. It is a symbol of the occupation where the preachers of war and violence gather and the slogans and symbols of their occupation tarnish the history, dignity, and values of our nation,” the description says.

It is promised that the funds donated will be used for the removal of construction debris.

It has been reported repeatedly that the monument and the possibility to dismantle it have been raised recently in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
