Latvia flies king-sized centenary flag

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Visitors to the Latvian capital cannot fail to notice a new element of the famous Riga skyline from October 18 with the unfurling of a very large new flag.

The 20 meter by 10 meter flag was run up a 60 meter flagpole on one of the windiest days of the year with a host of dignitaries craning their necks far below.

Ināra Mūrniece, the Speaker of the Saeima said the presence of the flag will remind people that they "live and will live in the state of Latvia."

She also noticed that the particular dark red used on the flag was known as Latvian red and therefore "is not like anywhere else."

The giant pennant is part of Latvia's centenary celebrations. The giant flag flying initiative was was idea of Saeima deputy Rihards Kols, who has produced this handy comparison of the flag with other large flags around the world.
