Liberation of Latgale commemorative events planned

Celebrating the 103rd anniversary of the liberation of Latgale, the 3rd Latgale Brigade of the National Guard will organize a series of commemorative events in cooperation with local municipalities in Latvia's eastern region.

The liberation of Latgale began on January 3, 1920 with the attack on Daugavpils, in which units of the Polish army also participated. Daugavpils was liberated from the Red Army and, continuing the advance, the retreat of the Red Army in the direction of Rēzekne was achieved. In the battle that started on the morning of January 21, Rēzekne was liberated, and on January 26 the bolsheviks were driven from Ludza, and by January 31, the territory of Latvia was completely freed from enemy forces. Hostilities formally ended on August 11, 1920 with the Latvian-Soviet Russia peace treaty.

On January 20, the headquarters of the 3rd Latgale brigade of the National Guard, in cooperation with the municipality of Rēzekne, is organizing several events in honor of the liberation of Rēzekne. At 12.00 in the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Rēzekne, there will be a Holy Mass after which a procession will take place to the Miera Street cemetery. 

At 1:20 p.m., a moment of remembrance and firing of a volley will be held at the Miera Street cemetery near the obelisk in memory of the soldiers who fell in the Freedom Struggle. At 2:20 p.m. at the monument "United Latvia!" there will be a laying of flowers and a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony of the National Guardsmen of the 32nd Infantry Battalion and the 36th Combat Support Battalion of the National Guard.

In order to introduce young people to the history of the battles for the liberation of Latgale and promote their understanding of the importance of these battles today, as well as to invite them to think about the value of the freedom won, the 3rd Latgale Brigade of the National Guard invites 10th-12th grade students to participate in a photo/video contest. More information about the photo/video contest is on the website of the Rēzekne Municipality.

In Daugavpils, on January 4, a memorial event was held at the cross in Slobodka, which was dedicated to the liberators of Latgale. Representatives of the Polish Embassy, ​​the Latvian Polish Union, the Daugavpils City Council and the 34th Infantry Battalion of the National Guard participated in the memorial event.

On January 16, representatives of the 35th Infantry Battalion of the National Guard will lay flowers in Rušenica at the monument at the site of the battles of the 3rd Jelgava Infantry Regiment, and on January 20, soldiers and guardsmen of the 36th Combat Support Battalion of the National Guard will gather there for a passing out ceremony.

On January 26, representatives of the 32nd infantry battalion of the National Guard will honor the memory of the soldiers who died in the battles for the liberation of Latgale by laying flowers at the memorial stone at the Bozova cemetery.
