Watch: Dietrich André Loeber centenary conference

Take note – story published 1 year ago

January 4 brings with it an interesting conference about an important figure in Latvian history: Dietrich André Loeber, or to give him his Latvianized name, Dītrihs Andrejs Lēbers (1923-2004).

With the participation of President Egils Levits (who knew Loeber personally), delegates including members of the Loeber family, legal scholars and historians will consider the role of Loeber in this, his centenary year, at Rīga Castle and the Mentzendorff House in Rīga.

On the third floor of the Mentzendorff House there is a memorial office to Loeber, and in fact he was the grandson of the last pre-war house owner, August Mentzendorff.

A Baltic German with Latvian citizenship, Loeber is credited with playing a crucial role in the restoration of the Latvian state after Soviet occupation and the reintroduction of an independent and fully-functioning legal system.

The conference is chaired by the Minister of Justice and assistant professor of the Department of Civil Legal Sciences of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, Dr. Inese Lībiņa-Egnere and head of the Department of History and Archeology of the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Latvia Dr. Andris Levans.

The conference is held in cooperation with the museum "Menzendorff House", the association "Latvian-Baltic Center DOMUS RIGENSIS", the Institute for German Culture and History of North-Eastern Europe (Institut für Kultur und Geschichte der Deutschen in Nordosteuropa) and the German-Baltic Society (Deutsch-Baltische Gesellschaft).

The conference can be viewed live here on LSM from 11:00, and also on the website of the Office of the President at www.president.lv and on social network accounts. It will be held in Latvian and German.
