Take note – story published 4 years ago

As part of an initiative to familiarize Latvian residents with the battlefields that have played an important role in the country's history, this week, from August 5 to August 11, the Ministry of Defense is inviting people to visit the memorial site of the Battle of Piņķi, where an important clash against Bolshevik forces took place on May 22, 1919.

Piņķi is just one stop on the 'Independence Road' competition being run by the ministry which challenges people to take selfies at various sites as they learn about the sites' significance.

Photos must be posted to Facebook profiles by Sunday, August 11th, with the tags #neatkaribascels and # Pinkukauja and a mention of one of the historical faces mentioned at the dedicated website www.neatkaribaskars.lv.

The competition launched July 15, inviting people to visit the Independence War Memorials compiled on the website of the Latvian Army, www.neatkaribaskars.lv . The competition is running for ten weeks and has already featured the memorial sites of the Battle of Šampēteris in Rīga, Ludza castle ruins, and the Northern Forts, in Karosta, Liepaja.

Three winners will receive a memorable prize: a VIP spot at the November 18 independence day military parade.

Full details at the website www.neatkaribaskars.lv which features an interactive map showing memorial sites across the country (though in Latvian only).
