Rīga to gain "Freedom Square"

Riga City Council City Development Committee on Monday, February 19, approved the naming of the territory around the iconic Freedom Monument as "Freedom square" (Brīvības laukums).

The territory around the Freedom Monument from Raina Boulevard to the crossroads of Zigfrida Anna Meierovica Boulevard and Aspazija Boulevard is wide, closed to traffic, and regularly used as a venue for celebrations and events, but has historically simply been referred to as Brīvības boulevard.

"To rename this section of the boulevard will be both practical and symbolic in celebrating the centenary of the country," said Maksims Tolstojs, Chairman of the City Development Committee.

It is also intended to place a plaque with explanatory text on the new square saying: "The square was named after the centennial of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia".

The final decision on the award of the name of the Freedom Square will still have to be adopted at a Riga City Council meeting.
