Silabriedis to take helm at Lielais Dzintars concert hall

The new artistic director of the acclaimed Lielais Dzintars concert hall in Liepāja starts work May 15 in the familiar form of veteran music broadcaster and journalist Orests Silabriedis.

On March 24 the concert hall announced an open competition for the position of artistic director. In the first round of the competition, five candidates were nominated, but in the second round, the competition evaluation committee evaluated two applicants with Orests Silabriedis finally recognized as the most suitable candidate.

The duties of the artistic director include the development, planning and implementation of new projects for the concert hall's overall artistic program, as well as cooperation with industry professionals in Latvia, Europe and the world.

"I have been connected with the cultural life of Liepāja in various ways since the 90s, and as time passed, the ties became closer and closer. I am very happy about the newly acquired opportunity, but I am also well aware that this is a serious test, because Liepāja is incomparably beautiful, but not an easy puzzle to solve," said Silabriedis of his appointment.

Orest Silabriedis is a familiar and respected fixture on the Latvian cultural landscape with more than 30 years of experience. He has worked on the creation of various concert cycles, festivals and artistic programs and since 2022, he has been a consultant for the repertoire policy and artistic activities of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra.

However, he's probably best known to the general public as a presenter on the classical music channel Latvian Radio 3, where his deep voice and polyglot mind allow him to offer intelligent commentary on practically any subject.

Since 2016, the artistic director of Liepaja concert hall has been Baiba Bartkeviča. The concert hall will continue its cooperation with her within the framework of the contemporary art festival "Liepājas Mākslas Forums" (Liepāja Art Forum).
