November 20 saw Latvian Television naming the 20 participants in the semi finals to be held in February 2025, one of which will be issued with a ticket to Basel, Switzerland to represent Latvia in a Eurovision 'semi final' and then on to obviously inevitable victory in the grand final itself.
The 20 acts – who include numerous familiar faces from Eurovisions past – were chosen by an "expert jury" whose names have not been revealed. Every year LTV cites unspecified "security reasons" as the explanation for why it won't say who is actually on the jury until after the Eurovision Song Contest itself has finished – by which time it is something of a fait accompli. Unfortunately the anonymity of the jury also makes it impossible to know if any of its members have pre-existing professional or personal relationships with any of the contestants.
Both in the semi-finals and the final, the role of the general public and the mystery jury will have equl weight. The winner will be determined by the overall rating of the audience's calls and SMS votes and the opaque conclave's secure deliberations.
Latvia's recent record in Eurovision is not particularly good. In May this year, the musician Dons represented Latvia with the song "Hollow", finishing in 16th place. He did at least reach the grand final – the first Latvian act to do so since 2016.
If you want to actually hear the songs, you'll have to wait until December 4th when all will be published on the Supernova website and YouTube channel.
The first Supernova semi-final is due to take place on February 1 at 21:10 on LTV1 and REplay.lv.
