Latvia is known for and proud of its wonderful bogs. So proud that the Drabiņi bog has its own amphitheater. Creator Jānis Gutāns-Grasis said he had created the amphitheater during active distancing times, when it seemed appropriate to use nature for art.
Lithuanian saxophonists Arvydas Kazlauskas and Liudas Mockūnas chose this exact location to give an improvisation concert and, while at it, record a vinyl plate. Listeners said the boggy atmosphere jazzed up the sound so much it seemed too surreal to believe.
"We all go to concerts with certain expectations. An improvisation concert makes you forget all assumptions. What is right and wrong and so on. Easier to say than do. (..) The surrounding scenery helped to follow the flow. I had all kinds of images in my mind. But the listener next to me had a bodily experience," wrote LSM author Aiga Leitholde.
The vinyl recorded at the bog is to come out in public in 2021. The bog amphitheater, with seats constructed from sods of peat, is planned to provide more musical events and performances in the future.
