Krūmiņa wins javelin gold for Latvia

Diāna Krūmiņa won the gold medal in the javelin at the Paris Paralympic Games on Tuesday, securing Latvia's first gold medal of the summer.

Krūmiņa secured the top spot for the second time in her career after her brilliant debut in 2016.

Krūmiņa became the leader in the first attempt, reaching 24.99 meters, which is a new Paralympic record in the F55 competition group as well as her season's best. The throw allowed her to be fairly confident of a medal even before the final rounds.

Krūmiņa did not improve on her first throw in the succeeding throws, but nor did anyone else, with eventual silver medallist Raissa Rocha Machado recording a best of 23.51 meters. The bronze medal was won by Sitong Lin of China with a throw of 22.35.

Competing in the F56 qualifying group, Krūmiņa previously reached 4th place in the discus competition, which she was very disappointed about and expressed her determination to take revenge in the javelin – a promise she made good on in some style.

Krumiņa took part in the Paralympic Games for the third time - she was the champion of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and took home bronze in 2021 in Tokyo in the javelin. Krūmiņa also won silver in Tokyo and bronze in Rio in the discus.
