Mūze-Sirmā started the competition with a 60.30-meter shot, almost her best of the season. She did not succeed in her second throw. Her javelin landed at about 55 meters. Mūze-Sirmā chose to step over the line and her second shot was not counted. Her third attempt was also unsuccessful and she deliberately stepped over the line after it.
Anete Sietiņa's first attempt was 56.73 meters, 59.46 meters in the second, and 60.57 meters in the third.
To qualify for the Olympic final, the javelin must be thrown 62 meters. A total of 12 athletes qualify for the final. If the number of athletes who meet the qualification standard does not reach 12, the next best results qualify for the final.
