Suharevs is competing in the 73-kilogram division at this Olympics. This is one weight class lower than at the Tokyo Olympics, where Suharevs finished sixth in the 81-kilogram division.
Suharevs started the competition with 147 kilograms in the snatch and 176 kilograms in the clean and jerk.
In the first move, Suharevs' attempt was not counted.
In his second attempt, Suharevs stayed at 147 kilograms, but this time too the Latvian was unable to cope with his chosen weight due to his injured shoulder.
"I've got nothing to say, guys. I feel as if I've disappointed everyone," said Suharevs in an interview after he withdrew.
Suharevs won bronze at the European Championships in February with a total of 331 kg (154 kg in snatch and 173 in clean and jerk).
