A goal from Renārs Varslavāns in the 64th minute proved to be the difference between the sides in a match that was far from a classic but did provide a few exciting moments – not least when Latvian goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics saved the home side's blushes with time running out when he made an excellent point blank save that prevented the Islanders returning home with a point.
The other match in the group Tuesday night sees North Macedonia pitted against Armenia. Led by head coach Paolo Nicolato, the Latvian national team started the four-team group tournament in the C League on Saturday with a heavy 4:1 loss away to Armenia, while the Faroe Islands drew at home against North Macedonia (1:1).
The Latvian national team will play the next two games in the tournament in a month's time, hosting North Macedonia on October 10, and playing in the Faroe Islands away on October 13.
