Latvian Paralympians receive heroes' welcomes in Rīga

Latvia's Paralympic team returned home late on September 9 and were given a warm welcome by well-wishers, with the whole thing covered live by Latvian Television.

At Rīga Airport, athletes were met by their nearest and dearest in an informal atmosphere, and then tributes took place around midnight at the Freedom Monument.

After a slightly disappointing medal-free Olympic Games in Paris earlier in the summer, the Paralympians produced a welcome return to winning ways, bringing back three gold medals and a silver. More importanly, their determination and enthusiasm showed that while winning medals is nice, it is by no means the only reason why sport matters.

Double equestrian gold medallist Rihards Snikus best summed things up in a speech he had composed which was read out at the Freedom Monument.

"Para-athletes show that everyone can pursue their dreams," said Snikus. "No matter what happens to us in our lifetime, it is indeed possible to do mighty things."

You can watch the complete coverage of the athletes' arrival and the congratulations they received from public and officials alike in the video below, which comes with sign-language subtitles.
