Latvian to run from Vilnius to Tallinn to commemorate Baltic Way

On the 35th anniversary of the Baltic Way, Latvian athlete Rūdolfs Birnbaums has pledged to run 678 kilometers from Vilnius to Tallinn, Latvian Radio reports.

Birnbaums will start in Vilnius at the Gediminas Castle tower on Friday, August 16, and finish in Tallinn's Old Town on August 23, the day of the anniversary of the Baltic Way.

He will start at 9 am each day and plans to run 85 kilometers on average per day. He is also inviting fellow runners to join him for a stage or the entire way.

On August 23, 1989, Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians turned out in huge numbers to form a human chain weaving through all three Baltic States to oppose Soviet occupation. Approximately two million people joined hands, forming a chain of over 600 kilometers through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
