Latvia defeats Sweden to seal hockey World Championship semi-final spot

Latvia's ice hockey team wrote a new page in the country's sporting history May 25 with victory over Sweden in Rīga in the IIHF World Championships, giving the co-hosts a place in the semi finals of the tournament for the first time ever.

Latvia were first to take the lead via Dans Ločmelis in the first period, only for Timothy Liljergen to level things up in the second.

Roared on by a passionate sell-out crowd, the third period belonged definitively to Latvia with goals from Miks Indrašis and then Jānis Jaks making the final score 3:1 to Latvia, with the puck crawling agonisingly over the line with the Swedes powerless to prevent it.

The USA, Germany and Canada all booked their semi-final berths with victories, too. The next challenge for Latvia will be posed by Canada in Tampere on Saturday with the prize a place in the final of the tournament.

As always, you can find full details and more coverage at LSM's dedicated ice hockey section and the official world championship website.
