Ostapenko, seeded 10th in the tournament, was soundly beaten by Camila Orsorio of Colombia in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
In truth, Ostapenko never really got going. While her aggressive, barnstorming style is always exciting to watch, she kept looking for quick, spectacular winners that rarely came off. In contrast, her opponent played a shrewd waiting game, usually content to keep the ball in play and wait for Ostapenko to make a mistake when she was unable to resist going for another power winner that more often than not fell wide or long.
Unfortunately, the loss means one of Latvia's best chances of an Olympic medal can be chalked off early. This is already the third Olympic Games in a row in which Ostapenko has been unable to get past the first round.
