Check out Latvia's Baltic cricket champions

Take note – story published 1 year ago

While summer in Latvia is associated with songs, dances and cold soup, in many other parts of the world it is associated with the sound of leather balls on willow bats and people dressed in white eating sandwiches. In other words, cricket, a sport that many people find puzzling but which is one of the world's major sports, with a particularly huge following in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh – countries which supply the backbone of Latvia's own cricket squad.

Though cricket is not likely to rival the popularity of ice hockey any time soon in Latvia, it is worth noting that there is a long-established Latvian Cricket Federation (affiliated to the International Cricket Council, the sport's global governing body) which organizes games involving several different domestic teams.

Moreover, in terms of Baltic cricket, Latvia is currently the regional superpower with the Latvian team triumphing in the recent Baltic Cup tournament hosted by the Estonian Cricket Association in Tallinn.

You can see highlights from the decisive game in the video above. Detailed scorecards and statistics can be accessed at: https://cricheroes.in/tournament/408261/Baltic-Cup-2022

"We have a great team, great energy, great spirit and great passion and dedicated people managing the Latvian Cricket Federation. We need great support and encouragement to promote awareness about the sport in Latvia and attract more and more people and boost the cricketing scene and take Team Latvia into a higher and more professional zone in the ICC hierarchy," one of the players, Dhanush Jujari, tells LSM.

If you happen to be in Rīga on August 20 and want a sample of what cricket looks like in the flesh, a tournament is taking place all day at the Turība University sports ground in Ziepniekalns where you can see Latvia's cricketing heroes in action.
