Finland won the World Floorball Championships in Riga December 11.

The Finns came from behind to defeat favorites Sweden in a thrilling final match after a week of action that has captured the imagination of many Latvian fans despite an under-powered performance by the home team.

Sweden took a 2-0 lead but the plucky Finnish team never gave up and eventually levelled the scores by the end of the first period.

Sweden took the lead again in the second period with one unanswered goal, but then nearly 8 minutes into the third period, Finland put things all square again.

It was 3-3 at the end of regular time meaning the title would be decided in overtime, but with no more goals from open play, it was time for a shoot-out, which the Finns won 4-2, sending their supporters into overdrive nd making the official final score 4-3.

In addition Finnish player Peter Kotilainen was elected as the player of the tournament.

Sweden had to settle for silver withthe third place medal going to Switzerland, who defeated the Czech Republic 8-5 in a playoff game before the grand final.

Congratulations to Finland and indeed to all the teams, plus the organizers, for a great tournament. We hope to see you floorballers back in Latvia soon.
