On January 2, Latvia's top-ranked male tennis player Ernests Gulbis defeated South Korea's Hyeon Chung 7-6, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Pune ATP World 250 series tennis tournament.

At the moment, Gulbis is ranked 95th in the ATP rankings, while Chung is ranked 25th in the world.

Gulbis has earned 45 ATP ranking points for advancing to the quarterfinals of the Maharashtra Open, where he will take on Croatia's Ivo Karlovic.

Known for being somewhat inconsistent, Gulbis' greatest success so far has been reaching 10th place in the ATP rankings in 2014.
