The 62-year-old Starkovs was dismissed during an emergency Latvian Football Federation board meeting today.
Six LFF board members voted for his dismissal, while three voted against.
As reported, last week the Latvian football team lost a friendly match to Gibraltar 0:1, which was one of the most embarrassing losses ever for the Latvian football team. Latvia is currently ranked a lowly 131st in the FIFA world rankings, but Gibraltar is currently ranked 206th in the world.
After the loss, Starkovs said that he was ashamed of the result, but said that he is not planning on stepping down as coach of the national team.
This was Starkovs' third stint as coach of the national team, who led Latvia to its historical run to qualify for EURO 2004.
Latvia will play its next competitive matches in June - the bi-annual Baltic Cup tournament.
