Latvia's unfancied ice hockey team pulled out a great performance May 10 to get within an ace of beating the unbeaten USA team in the IIHF world ice hockey championship in Denmark.

With the scores locked 2-2 at the end of regulation time, overtime was called for and it was the Americans who finally sealed the game 3-2 thanks to a Cam Atkinson goal.

Despite displaying admirable grit throughout, coach Bob Hartley is likely to call for greater discipline with Latvia regularly suffering due to the penalty count against them.

Latvia have now won two and lost two in the IIHF world championship, but qualification for the second round remains a possibility if they hit a winning streak in their remaining three group games. They currently lie in fourth place in Group B. Next up is Germany on May 12 followed by Canada on May 14 and hosts Denmark on May 15.
