Take note – story published 4 years ago

Around 30 to 40 Latvian athletes representing 15 different sports will take part in the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Aldons Vrublevskis, President of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC), told LETA on July 29.

Vrublevskis noted that the Olympic qualifying competitions have been ongoing since last year and that athletes can still secure spots in the national Olympic team by showing strong results in their respective sports and disciplines.

LOC Secretary-General Zorzs Tikmers told LETA that 87 athletes representing 17 kinds of sports are currently being seen as potential candidates for the Olympic team. Three athletes have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in athletics. Eleven of the 87 athletes have already participated in previous Games, Tikmers said, adding that the new national Olympic team will include some 35 athletes.

At next year’s Olympics Latvia will only be represented in individual sports, Tikmers said.

Today, Latvia received the official invitation to participate in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, which will take place from July 24 to August 9, 2020.
