Latvian soccer team wins promotion, but may miss out on 2024 play-off spot

The Latvian men's football team won its Nations League group and secured promotion September 25 – but came perilously close to throwing all its hard work away after failing to beat Andorra in the final match.

Latvia secured a 1:1 draw away against Andorra, with a win required to guarantee promotion.

Vladislavs Gutkovskis put the visitors on track in the 50th minute but unfortunately they were unable to defend their lead until the end of the game, with Andorra's Albert Rosas salvaging a point with just two minutes remaining on the clock.

The draw left Latvia reliant upon results elsewhere falling its way and for once, the footballing gods were smiling.

However, failure to get the win may still have ramifications. If Estonia gets at least a draw against San Marino on Monday, Latvia's northern neighbors will pip Latvia to a play-off spot for the 2024 European Championship. If San Marino manage an upset, it could still happen.

Nevertheless, Latvia will climb a tier from Group D to Group C when the next Nations League tournament comes around.
