Latvian women outstanding at Federation Cup

The Latvian women's tennis team was successful in advancing out of the Federation Cup's Europe/Africa Zone Group I for the first time since 1993 on February 10 after defeating Serbia 2-1.

The Latvian team will now play in a special play-off in a bid to to earn promotion to World Group II.

Latvia was led by Alona Ostapenko (WTA 6) and Anastasija Sevastova (WTA 15) in the group tournament in Tallinn, defeating Austria, Poland and Turkey in the group stage, and then defeating Serbia in the decisive playoff round stage to earn a chance at promotion to the World Group II.

Latvia will find out its opponent in the promotional playoff next week after the World Group II completes its tournament.
