Latvia's Olympic campaign over for another four years

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia finished its campaign at the 2018 PyeongChang winter Olympics with plenty of good performances but just one medal, a bronze won by Oskars Melbardis and Janis Strenga in the two-man bobsleigh.

Hopes Melbardis could double his medal tally in the four-man event were not realised when his team finished just two places from the podium in fifth place February 25.

Melbardis and company actually managed the second-best time overall on their final run of four, but mistakes in the earlier rounds meant that they could not improve enough to earn a medal.

Germany claimed both gold and silver medals in the event with the hosts South Korea securing the bronze.

Thanks to all competitors for their efforts - the medal count may not have been huge but Latvia repeatedly proved it can field very high quality athletes in international competition and the younger competitors in particular promise some great things at future games.
