Loss to Sweden puts paid to Latvia's hockey qualification hopes

Take note – story published 4 years ago

The Latvian national hockey team was defeated by Sweden 4:5 (0:1, 1:1, 3:3) at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia on May 20.

That means Latvia, regardless of how tomorrow's match against Norway ends, will not play in the quarterfinals this year.

But it was a fighting performance against the renowned Swedish side. Roberts Bukarts scored a hat trick for Latvia and Janis Jaks added one more goal. The goals for Sweden were scored by Elias Pettersson, Adrian Kempe, Anton Lander, Patric Hornqvist, and Dennis Rasmussen.

Russia is currently in first place in Group B with 18 points from six games, the Czech Republic and Sweden have 15 points each, and Switzerland is fourth with 12 points. Latvia and Norway both have six points after six matches, while Austria and Italy have zero points.

In the last group match tomorrow, Latvia will play Norway at 17:15 p.m. Latvian time / 14:15 GMT.
