Melbārdis gets first medal for Latvia at 2018 Winter Olympics in two-man bob

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia scored the first medal in the 2018 Winter Olympics with Oskars Melbārdis' two-man bob ranking third in a four-round run.

Canadian two-man bobsleigh team of Justin Kripps tied Germany's Francesco Friedrich for the gold medal position, meaning both teams win gold.

The Latvia-1 bob team piloted by Melbārdis, with brakeman Jānis Strenga, finished third. After lying in fourth place after the first two runs, Melbārdis pulled out a near-flawless final run to be in with a real chance of gold. However, the Canadian and German teams did just enough to stay ahead despite making some mistakes.
