Latvian equestrian Kristaps Neretnieks and his horse Moon Ray maintained their number one ranking in the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) regional rankings released on January 6, meaning that he qualifies for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, becoming the first Latvian equestrian to do so.

75 equestrians qualified in jumping, but only 15 of them qualified according to individual ranking. The rest of the participants qualified as part of their national teams. Neretnieks and Moon Ray closed the 2019 season as leaders in the Olympic qualification C group, which counts Eastern European and Central Asian equestrian results. The duo racked up 895 points, beating second place pair Wojciech Wojcianiec and Chintablue by 123 points.

Latvian equestrian Sergejs Šakurovs participated in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul as part of the USSR team. Several Latvian athletes qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics last year including javelin thrower Līna Mūze, decathlete Laura Ikauniece, as well as beach volleyball pairs Tīna Graudiņa/Anastasija Kravčenoka and Mārtiņš Pļaviņš/Edgars Točs. Qualifications for many other sports will finish only in summer of this year.
