Ostapenko in French Open semi final

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia's young tennis star Jelena Ostapenko will on June 8 play for a place in the final of the  French open tennis championship, one of the most prestigious 'grand slam' tournaments in the world.

Ostapenko won her place in Thursday's semi final after a sensational victory over former world number one Catherine Wosniacki of Denmark in the quarter final (4-6, 6-2, 6-2)- and you can watch highlights via the link below.

After losing the first five games in a row, it seemed Ostapenko would progress no further in the tournament but in a remarkable turnaround she overcame her more experienced opponent in the second and third sets.

In the semi final she will play Swiss 30th seed Timea Bacsinszky, who beat France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-4 6-4. And if she plays anything like she did Wednesday, Ostapenko is entirely capable of making Saturday's final, which would rank as the greatest achievement of any Latvian tennis player.

The Riga-born star is just 19 years of age and despite being an obvious talent for years is still developing as a player. June 8, the day of the semi-final, also just happens to be her 20th birthday.

She is currently ranked 47 in the world -  ranking that is sure to climb whatever the outcome of Thursday's match. She has already earned more than a million dollars since turning pro in 2012.

thursday's match will be shown live on LTV7 from approximately 15:00 Riga time. Good luck Jelena!
