According to our sports department, from December 3 to 11, Riga will be the center of the floorballing universe with teams from around the globe arriving to try and score more goals than each other.
The Swedes are the hot favorites to triumph, with Finland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland also regarded highly.
The Swedes' dominance is perhaps explained by the fact that of 309,397 floorball players registered worldwide, more than 120,000 are in Sweden. They are to floorball what China is to the world population..
Naturally we'll be cheering for Latvia regardless of our near-complete ignorance of the rules.
Matches will be shown live on the LTV7 television channel, so hopefully over the course of the week we will have increased our familiarity to the point where we can shout "Great play!", "Foul, referee!" and "Offside, surely?" at the correct moments. [There is no offside in floorball -- Sports Department]
16 teams will be competing for floorball glory, so what better time to join us in boning up on the sport at the website of the International Floorball Federation (IFF - slogan: "One world, one ball, FLOORBALL").
You can also follow all the championship action via the official twitter feed.
