RFS seals Latvian soccer championship title at end of trying season

On Saturday, the last matches of this season were played in Latvian soccer's top league, the Virsliga, and ended with FK Rīgas Futbola Skola (RFS) being crowned champions.

Going into the final round of games there was a chance second-placed Valmiera could snatch the crown if they won and RFS lost their final matches but RFS held their nerve against Daugavpils to win 2:0 while Valmiera were frustrated by a goaless draw against last year's champions Rīga FC.

The RFS were crowned champions, leaving Valmiera in second place, and Liepāja securing third spot and a place in European competition next year with a 1:0 win against Spartak Jūrmala.

It was an exciting end to a difficult season for all clubs. As well as having to cope with the changing rules  of the Covid crisis that saw spectators barred for many games, financial pressure forced the Ventspils team out of the fixture list following a lengthy ban on European competition from UEFA while another match-fixing scandal saw the Noah Jūrmala team dropping out, too. Consequently only seven of the nine teams that started the season managed to finish it.
